New Flash Forum

Posted on: November 25th, 2005 by alemieux

There’s a new Flash forum on the web. Last ActionScript Hero is a new Flash forum and it’s touted to be a forum for Flash developers, not people looking for basic help with Flash, but those who are knee deep into Flash and ActionScript development.

I registered today and am waiting to get my confirmation email. Flash forums have been a huge help to me personally in the past. Were-here, Macromedia, and Ultrashock have been an incredible resource for me on projects that I’ve had. I’ve even been lucky enough to find people who were willing to take my file and analyze it and then send it back with comments. So, if you haven’t signed up for a Flash forum yet, do so now.

Intel Offers a Quick Start Up Solution

Posted on: November 23rd, 2005 by alemieux

In this article there’s a reference to an article at PC World about Intel using Robson flash memory to significantly reduce the startup time of a PC as well as faster startup times for apps. Since the Robson flash memory is not a typical hard drive that has to spin up to load apps, the startup time is increased, sometimes 5 times faster. An example, with the flash memory it only took 2.9 seconds to launch Quicken, whereas the PC with standard memory took 8 seconds.

One thing that particularly annoys me on the Mac platform is the startup time for graphics applications. Particularly Adobe applications (most notably Bridge). I can startup Photoshop and it takes about 30 seconds to load completely. That doesn’t sound like a lot and it’s helpful to have another machine to move over to to keep me occupied, but sometimes you just need to get something done quickly and you expect all of your computing power to help you in those situations.

Since Apple has partnered with Intel for their chip manufacturing, it would be interesting to see an X86 OSX Mac with the Robson flash memory model in place. Boot up and go!
